E-Mail Scam
- The Best Buy E-mail Scam
Best Buy, the Minnesota based electronics retailer, became the victim earlier this summer of a scam that has plagued many e-commerce sites. A scam e-mail message, which is not actually sent by Best Buy, ostensibly alerts recipients of the possible theft of their credit card number. The e-mail goes on to advise users to click on a link within the message that will direct them to the retailer's fraud department. This e-mail message is a scam!
The link within the fraudulent e-mail message shows "http://www.BestBuy.com/fraud_department.html." However, the link actually redirects the user to another site -- one not operated by Best Buy. This site asks the user for sensitive personal data including social security number and credit card information.
If you receive this fraudulent e-mail message, we encourage you to report it to the Internet Fraud Complaint Center at
http://ifccfbi.gov
. (This organization works in partnership with the Federal Bureau of Investigation - the FBI.) Alternatively, you can report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission, this country's consumer protection agency, at
http://www.consumer.gov/idtheft/
. Users who have already inadvertently provided credit card information via this deceptive e-mail should contact their credit card and/or bank immediately and cancel those accounts. If you've already provided social security number information, the Federal Trade Commission site provides contact information for each of three national consumer credit bureaus so you can place a fraud alert on your files and obtain a copy of your consumer report.
goNDTC.com
- NDTC's new domain name
If you are confused about using stellarnet.com and goNDTC.com, you might find the following information useful:
Almost one year ago, NDTC began migrating to a new domain name. The "stellarnet" name (the name given to our Internet service) was confusing for customers, hard to remember and difficult to spell correctly. A new domain name was chosen - goNDTC.com.
Since last fall, all new NDTC Internet customers have been given the goNDTC.com domain name for their e-mail accounts. goNDTC has proven to be easier to spell and remember for our customers. The capitalization in goNDTC.com is not required, but makes the domain name easier to read.
NDTC has continued to support the use of the stellarnet.com domain. If you are still using stellarnet.com, keep in mind you should begin using the goNDTC domain name. For example, instead of janedoe@stellarnet.com you should now be using janedoe@goNDTC.com for your email address. Don't worry, whether you use stellarnet.com or goNDTC.com, you will continue to receive all your email messages until the domain name stellarnet is no longer supported.
NDTC will be dropping support for the stellarnet.com domain at some time in the future. At this time, a date has not been set, but we want to give customers using "stellarnet.com" ample time to make changes.
If you need assistance changing the settings for your e-mail address, please contact our Internet Help Desk at 662-8350 or 1-888-840-6382.
At this time, your e-mail to your address @stellarnet.com will continue to function as it always has. However, we strongly encourage you to notify your contacts, and list your e-mail address as your login @goNDTC.com on your next order of stationary or business cards.
Ask The Help Desk
- How Do I Make Changes To Documents That Have Been Sent As Attachments?
Question:
I received an attachment from a friend that contains a spreadsheet. I've opened up the attachment and made adjustments to the numbers within the spreadsheet. I want to send these changes back to my friend at a later date. My problem is that when I go back to open the spreadsheet to review my changes, none of the revisions I've made have been saved. Why are my changes not saved on the spreadsheet?
Answer:
It sounds like you've attempted to make changes to the document by simply opening the e-mail attachment without first saving the document onto your desktop. You can view a document that has been sent to you as an e-mail attachment. However, if you want to actually make changes to the document, you'll first need to save the document onto your computer. To save an attachment to your computer, simply click your cursor arrow on "Save" (rather than "Open") and choose a place to save the attachment from the resulting list of choices provided. You can then go to the document, open it, make changes to your spreadsheet and then select "Save" under the File menu located at the top of your computer. Now you can select the document as a new, revised attachment at a later date and e-mail it back to your friend. The new attachment will contain the spreadsheet that includes your revisions.
