SP2 Automatically Downloaded
- Important Info For Windows XP Users
Many Windows XP users have noticed the recent inability to see graphics within incoming e-mail messages. That's because Microsoft has now made its Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) a "required critical update" for all people using Windows XP. One of the "features" of the SP2 software is that it blocks images from being displayed within incoming e-mail messages. (See below for information on changing your settings to allow images to reappear within e-mail messages.)
The DMCA and You
- The Dangers of P2P Sharing
NDTC has been getting more copyright infringement notifications lately. We feel that, as an Internet Service Provider, we should educate our customers about this issue, as it is extremely important and the repercussions could be monetary fines and even imprisonment.
The use of file sharing software such as Kazaa, Napster, and other peer-to-peer (also known as P2P) software has become more and more prevalent. This type of file sharing is very convenient and simple to use. However, many people are sharing copyrighted material, such as songs, movies, and software. The sharing of copyrighted material in digital form is considered piracy by the copyright holders and the US Government, and is addressed in US law by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1988 (DMCA). A summary of the DMCA is available at
http://www.copyright.gov/legislation/dmca.pdf
, and the full text list of each draft is at
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c105:H.R.2281:
(choose the last link on the list for the finalized version).
NDTC receives the copyright infringement notice, initially, because NDTC "owns" the ip address that the infringing user was allocated. We, in turn, determine who was using the ip address in question at the time of the incident. We then send a letter explaining the situation, with a copy of the original complaint, to the customer who it was determined was using the ip address at the time. We allow up to 2 weeks for the customer to clean the computer of the copyrighted material and require that they sign a form stating that they have removed the offending material and return in the enclosed self-addressed stamped envelope. At this point, the matter is considered resolved. However, if NDTC is contacted again about the same customer sharing copyrighted material, we must resort to stronger methods of dealing with the problem, up to and including disconnection of the internet account, and in extreme cases, releasing name and address information to a court order. Thankfully, we have never had to resort to these extreme methods. In most cases, the customer does not realize that the P2P file sharing software is sharing out the copyrighted material, which is the default setting for this type of software.
The best way to deal with P2P software is to not use it. The DMCA also defines the penalties of the offences:
Sec. 1204. Criminal offenses and penalties
(a) IN GENERAL- Any person who violates section 1201 or 1202 willfully and for purposes of commercial advantage or private financial gain--
(1) shall be fined not more than $500,000 or imprisoned for not more than 5 years, or both, for the first offense; and
(2) shall be fined not more than $1,000,000 or imprisoned for not more than 10 years, or both, for any subsequent offense.
Sharing of copyrighted material is considered very serious, as the penalties show. There have been cases where people have been fined and imprisoned on this issue, and the copyright holders are becoming more aggressive with each subsequent win in the court systems. Please exercise caution when using any P2P software, or better yet, uninstall it completely so it is not possible to have this happen to you.

Short Tutorial
- Locating Hard-To-Find E-mail Messages
Have you ever tried to find an e-mail message in your inbox folder that was sent to you months ago but you can't recall the name or e-mail address of the sender? Plus, your search for key words that were possibly included in the subject line of the message hasn't given you successful results. Well, don't despair. You can also search for key words within the actual message pane windows of e-mail messages located in your inbox folder (and your other folders as well). Depending on how many messages are stored in your inbox and how specific your key word search is, there's a good chance of quickly finding the exact message that you're looking for. See the step-by-step tutorials below.
